Metamorphism in the Eastern Alps
Metamorphism is geoscientifically defined as the change of rocks under conditions of high pressure and temperature, resulting in the formation of new mineral phases.
Across the Alps, the metamorphic grade increases from the North towards the Central Zone and decreases again towards the South.
High-grade metamorphic rocksoccur in the central parts of the Alps (Hohe Tauern,Koralpe and Saualpe). Rocks of the Southern Alps have not been transformed by metamorphism.
