Prospecting methods for unconsolidated sediment deposits
2017
Methodological improvement of integrated prospecting strategies (geophysics, mineralogy, geochemistry, sediment petrology) for an optimized material-specific characterization of selected unconsolidated sediment deposits. Assignment of geophysical measurement parameters (area, line and point information) to geological/lithological information and survey data (e.g. drilling profiles, geological outcrops) with supplementary laboratory analysis (mineralogy, clay mineralogy, granulometry, geochemistry).
Electrical resistivity distribution based on aeroelectromagnetic (AEM) data at the depth of 30 metres. Assembled representation of the el. resistivity distribution based on AEM and geoelectrical (lines) measurements with outcrop data (sampling points, boreholes, IRIS mining database)

The project objective is an integrative compilation of all available datasets in order to enable an optimized material-specific characterization of selected loose sediment deposits using geophysical methods. This includes the evaluation and reinterpretation of existing data (e.g. aerogeophysics, ground geophysics, mineralogy, geochemistry, raw material extraction database, unconsolidated rock map) and an extensive geophysical measurement program, accompanied by geological / lithological investigations and laboratory analysis.

This methodical approach, should offer the possibility for a detailed recording and evaluation of raw material-specific parameters (thickness, volume, internal structure, grain size distribution).

The following types of loose sediments are investigated:

  1. Pleistocene unconsolidated sediments (along Brixentaler and Windauer Ache) and mudslide debris/ alluvial fans – Tyrol
  2. Murschuttkegeln/
    Schwemmfächern,
  3. high-quality/high purity quartz sands (Karlstetten) – Lower Austria
  4. high quality clay deposits
