EuroLithos

European ornamental stone resources
2018
Establishing an inventory and a characterization of natural / ornamental stones used in the past and up-to-date. The Geological Survey contributes to the Atlas of European Ornamental Stones and provides data of dimension stones, quarries and occurrences from Austria
GeoERA project Eurolithos - Atlas of European Ornamental Stones
The project EuroLithos is going to reflect the culturally significant diversity of native ornamental stones extended over the area of the participating European countries. The aim is the presentation of relevant natural resources (geology, quarries), the characterization of these mineral resources (physical and geochemical properties) as well as their products (in architecture, monuments, artistic masterpieces) and the description of maintenance and preservation in stone heritage. The cooperation of 16 participant institutions (mostly geological services) from 15 European countries promises a manifold compendium and guideline which will be delivered as "Atlas of European Ornamental Stones" (work package 3), as "Directory of ornamental stone properties (work package 4) and "Ornamental Stone heritage" (work package 5) covering the area of the participant countries. Project organization, natural stone information platform and networking on other such inventories are covered by work packages 1, 2 and 6. The results of the project shall raise the sense of tradition for the value of ornamental stones (dimension stones) and shall give advice for their utilization.
